Why Hyperliquid asks you to Enable Trading again every 14 days

Hyperliquid's Enable Trading approval expires after 14 days. When it does, the app asks you to enable trading again and your wallet has to sign. An API wallet that you authorize yourself on Hyperliquid's API page can last up to 180 days, so the wallet signs about twice a year.

What Enable Trading does

When you press Enable Trading (the app also calls it Establish Connection), your wallet signs once. That signature approves a trading key that the app creates and keeps in your browser. From then on the key signs your orders, which is why you are not asked to confirm each trade on the device.

Why it comes back

  • The key is approved for 14 days. After that it stops working and the app asks again.
  • The app keeps one such key per account. Enabling trading in another browser or on a phone replaces it, so the first browser asks again even if 14 days have not passed.
  • Clearing the site's data in the browser removes the key too.

The app does not offer a setting to make this session longer.

How to sign less often

  1. Open app.hyperliquid.xyz/API with your wallet connected.
  2. Enter a name, press Generate and copy the private key it shows. It is shown once.
  3. Set the number of days to 180 and press Authorize. Your wallet signs once.
  4. Install Coldfront, paste the key into its setup page and choose a passphrase.
  5. Unlock Coldfront and open Hyperliquid. The header shows your account and the app does not ask for Enable Trading.

Coldfront is free. It works with accounts that use Hyperliquid referral code COLDFRONT; setup adds the code for an account that has none. The API wallet guide explains what the key can and can't do, and the Ledger and Trezor guides walk through each device.

Questions

How long does Enable Trading last on Hyperliquid?

14 days. When it expires, the app asks you to press Enable Trading again and your wallet signs once more. With a Ledger or Trezor that means getting the device out every two weeks.

Why did Hyperliquid ask me to Enable Trading again before 14 days were up?

The app keeps one such key per account. If you enable trading in another browser or on your phone, the new key replaces the old one, and the first browser asks you to sign again.

Can I change the 14 days in Hyperliquid's settings?

No. The app does not offer a setting for it. The longer option is an API wallet, which you authorize on the API page for up to 180 days.

Does every order need a signature from my hardware wallet?

No. Enable Trading puts a trading key in the browser, and that key signs your orders. The hardware wallet signs to enable trading, to withdraw and to transfer.

Is a 180-day API wallet less safe than the 14-day key?

They are the same kind of key: both can place and cancel orders and neither can withdraw. The difference is time. A leaked key keeps working until it expires or you remove it, so a longer one should be stored encrypted and removed on the API page if you think it leaked.

How do I use a 180-day API wallet on the normal Hyperliquid site?

With Coldfront, a free Chrome extension. It keeps the API key encrypted on your computer and gives it to the official Hyperliquid app while unlocked, so the app does not ask for Enable Trading.
